Anne Locquen

Anne is a French engineer and photographer who bases her work on instant photography, creating uncomplicated and expressive images that are eloquent and evocative at the same time. In her images we can appreciate the love for her people, which is immortalized in quiet scenes where light and composition are carefully studied. To Anne, Polaroids are the right medium to express her feelings, conjugating love, poetry and imperfections in single and adorable frames.

First of all thank you very much for your contribution to our project. Can you please introduce yourself for us?

My name is Anne Locquen, I grew up in Paris and I live in La Rochelle (France), work in a high school and I’m trained engineer.

How did you start in photography?

I could not say how long I’ve been interested in photography. For years, I browsed through pictures, but never once did I dare to pick up a camera and take the plunge myself. One day about 4 years ago, I was hunting for a Polaroid for the first time in a second-hand market. It was a real turning point for me. It was love at the first sight!

What inspires your work?

My work revolves around intimacy. I concentrate it around ‘private life’ photographing those close to me: my children, family, friends and me with the intention of making the viewer want to find and explore connections with their own existence. I’m inspired by people who are part of my life.

Why do you prefer shooting instant photography?

Instant film is a wonderful, unpredictable medium thanks to its unique and specific grain. Polaroid is also a very creative medium and I think it can reveal creativity. I’m not looking for technical perfection in my work but rather to pass an emotion and visual poetry and I think I can do it with instant film.

If you could travel and stay in a place for one year, where would you choose to go?

I think I would like to go to Mongolia. I would love to be a nomad for one year!

What’s your favourite movie?

I love ‘Mustang’ a film by Deniz Gamze Ergüven, a real tribute to women, freedom and insubordination. A wonderful movie.

What is your favourite photo book?

It’s difficult… Maybe ‘Frame’ by Mark Cohen.
