Photography by Kumi Oguro

May 09, 2016

Kumi is a Japanese artist currently based in Belgium. Her work is an exploration of dreams, that succession of images, ideas, emotions and sensations that occur involuntarily in our minds when we sleep. Using female bodies, Kumi brings to life these normally difficult-to-remember images that otherwise would be forever lost.

Following we want to present an interview we had with Kumi:

am - First of all thank you very much for your contribution to our project. Can you please tell us where are you from and what do you do at the moment?

KO- I live in Antwerp, Belgium. Originally I’m from Japan. Right now I’m preparing a duo exhibition “THERE IS ONLY THE REAL” starting soon at IBASHO gallery, Antwerp.

am - What inspires your work?

KO - Certain literature, films, theater, dance performances etc. What inspires me often manifests itself much later, when I forget about it.

am - On most of your series you work with humans in different poses and situations, what is the meaning of this?

KO - I am intrigued by the images of our dreams just before awakening: it is difficult to find the logic there, there is nothing to indicate time, the space is indeterminate. In my work, I try to create an atmosphere that is quite close to those dream images. It is not clear whether we see a frozen moment of what was going on (whatever it is) or rather if the models are waiting to be awakened from a long, long sleep. It is important for me to keep this ambiguity. These anonymous women are balancing on a thin line between the childlike and the sensual, the fragile and the destructive, the tragic and the playful.

am - Who are your favourite photographers / artists?

KO - I don’t really have anyone in particular. Right now, I’m very much impressed by the works of Henry Darger that I recently saw in Rotterdam.

am - How would you describe your photographs in 3 words?

KO - Intuition / Control / Noise

am - What are 5 things you could absolutely not live without?

KO - 8 hours of sleep / certain level of solitude / friends, among them my models / D and J / books

am - If you could travel and stay in a place for one year, where would you choose to go?

am - Favourite songs / bands at the moment?

KO - Last year I truly enjoyed seeing The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion live.

Musically I still live in the 90’s.

am - What’s your favourite movie?

KO - Too many to mention one!

Last year I watched “Moon” by Duncan Jones for a couple of times in a row.

am - What are you reading at the moment?

KO - “The Fourth Hand” by John Irving.

am - What’s your favourite season and why?

KO - Whenever it’s not too hot of too cold.

am - Your main unanswered question in life?

KO - Why I always dream so weird?

am - Do you have any project in mind that could be a personal or professional challenge?

KO - I would really really like to make/publish my second book!!! (The first one is “NOISE”, published from Le caillou bleu in 2008) Anyone interested to help me out??

am - Thank you very much for your time and your contribution to analog magazine.
