Luca is an Italian photographer with a minimalist approach to photography. His fabulous images derive from a passion for lines and symmetry. In his takes we can perceive a great sense of abstraction, revealing that Luca possess a privileged eye allowing him to compose extraordinary frames. In this way, it is not a surprise to discover that Luca's favourite photo book is "Kodachrome" by Luigi Ghirri, since we can establish clear parallelisms between the two of them.
Following we present a short interview that we had with him:
am - First of all thank you very much for your contribution to our project. Can you please introduce yourself for us?
LG - I’m Luca Galavotti and I’m a documentary and fashion photographer based in Bologna, Italy. I started photographing in the early 2000s, first I began taking pictures of my surroundings, then for five years I've been working for a photography agency and have been traveling to many different places, in Italy and abroad. Aside my personal projects, I mostly work in the fashion photography field.
am - How did you start in photography?
LG - I’ve been interested in visual arts since I was young, but my approach to photography started when I got my father's old analogue camera for the first time.
am - We can see that your work is very minimal, what attracts you about this?
LG - I like clean and linear photography, without frills, almost minimalist. This style comes from my passion for lines and symmetry. We live surrounded by lines, they are everywhere, they give a shape to everything, but often we do not even notice them. I like to give them importance.
am - What inspires your work?
LG - I love wide spaces. I love wind. I love light. I'm inspired by everyday life, moments, lights. I love to portray the essence of people I meet and places I visit.
am - How would you describe your visual language?
LG - I would describe it with just one word: natural.
am - Who are your favourite photographers / artists?
LG - I do not have a favorite one, I appreciate works both from photography masters and emerging talents from all over the world.
am - What are your main interests as an artist?
LG - I've always been interested in architecture and visual arts in general. I love to know different cultures, explore the world. My passions are music, nature, and snowboarding.
am - What’s your favourite movie?
LG - Difficult question. The list would be too long, hahaha.
am - What is your favourite photo book?
LG - Kodachrome by Luigi Ghirri.
am - Thank you very much for your time and your contribution to analog magazine.
